======================================================================== * README ======================================================================== OpenSSL 1.0.2u 20 Dec 2019 Copyright (c) 1998-2019 The OpenSSL Project Copyright (c) 1995-1998 Eric A. Young, Tim J. Hudson All rights reserved. DESCRIPTION ----------- The OpenSSL Project is a collaborative effort to develop a robust, commercial-grade, fully featured, and Open Source toolkit implementing the Secure Sockets Layer (SSLv3) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols as well as a full-strength general purpose cryptograpic library. The project is managed by a worldwide community of volunteers that use the Internet to communicate, plan, and develop the OpenSSL toolkit and its related documentation. OpenSSL is descended from the SSLeay library developed by Eric A. Young and Tim J. Hudson. The OpenSSL toolkit is licensed under a dual-license (the OpenSSL license plus the SSLeay license), which means that you are free to get and use it for commercial and non-commercial purposes as long as you fulfill the conditions of both licenses. OVERVIEW -------- The OpenSSL toolkit includes: libssl.a: Provides the client and server-side implementations for SSLv3 and TLS. libcrypto.a: Provides general cryptographic and X.509 support needed by SSL/TLS but not logically part of it. openssl: A command line tool that can be used for: Creation of key parameters Creation of X.509 certificates, CSRs and CRLs Calculation of message digests Encryption and decryption SSL/TLS client and server tests Handling of S/MIME signed or encrypted mail And more... INSTALLATION ------------ See the appropriate file: INSTALL Linux, Unix, etc. INSTALL.DJGPP DOS platform with DJGPP INSTALL.NW Netware INSTALL.OS2 OS/2 INSTALL.VMS VMS INSTALL.W32 Windows (32bit) INSTALL.W64 Windows (64bit) INSTALL.WCE Windows CE SUPPORT ------- See the OpenSSL website www.openssl.org for details on how to obtain commercial technical support. If you have any problems with OpenSSL then please take the following steps first: - Download the latest version from the repository to see if the problem has already been addressed - Configure with no-asm - Remove compiler optimisation flags If you wish to report a bug then please include the following information and create an issue on GitHub: - On Unix systems: Self-test report generated by 'make report' - On other systems: OpenSSL version: output of 'openssl version -a' OS Name, Version, Hardware platform Compiler Details (name, version) - Application Details (name, version) - Problem Description (steps that will reproduce the problem, if known) - Stack Traceback (if the application dumps core) Just because something doesn't work the way you expect does not mean it is necessarily a bug in OpenSSL. HOW TO CONTRIBUTE TO OpenSSL ---------------------------- See CONTRIBUTING LEGALITIES ---------- A number of nations restrict the use or export of cryptography. If you are potentially subject to such restrictions you should seek competent professional legal advice before attempting to develop or distribute cryptographic code. ======================================================================== * crypto/bf/README ======================================================================== This is a quick packaging up of my blowfish code into a library. It has been lifted from SSLeay. The copyright notices seem a little harsh because I have not spent the time to rewrite the conditions from the normal SSLeay ones. Basically if you just want to play with the library, not a problem. eric 15-Apr-1997 ======================================================================== * crypto/des/README ======================================================================== libdes, Version 4.01 10-Jan-97 Copyright (c) 1997, Eric Young All rights reserved. This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms specified in COPYRIGHT. -- The primary ftp site for this library is ftp://ftp.psy.uq.oz.au/pub/Crypto/DES/libdes-x.xx.tar.gz libdes is now also shipped with SSLeay. Primary ftp site of ftp://ftp.psy.uq.oz.au/pub/Crypto/SSL/SSLeay-x.x.x.tar.gz The best way to build this library is to build it as part of SSLeay. This kit builds a DES encryption library and a DES encryption program. It supports ecb, cbc, ofb, cfb, triple ecb, triple cbc, triple ofb, triple cfb, desx, and MIT's pcbc encryption modes and also has a fast implementation of crypt(3). It contains support routines to read keys from a terminal, generate a random key, generate a key from an arbitrary length string, read/write encrypted data from/to a file descriptor. The implementation was written so as to conform with the manual entry for the des_crypt(3) library routines from MIT's project Athena. destest should be run after compilation to test the des routines. rpw should be run after compilation to test the read password routines. The des program is a replacement for the sun des command. I believe it conforms to the sun version. The Imakefile is setup for use in the kerberos distribution. These routines are best compiled with gcc or any other good optimising compiler. Just turn you optimiser up to the highest settings and run destest after the build to make sure everything works. I believe these routines are close to the fastest and most portable DES routines that use small lookup tables (4.5k) that are publicly available. The fcrypt routine is faster than ufc's fcrypt (when compiling with gcc2 -O2) on the sparc 2 (1410 vs 1270) but is not so good on other machines (on a sun3/260 168 vs 336). It is a function of CPU on chip cache size. [ 10-Jan-97 and a function of an incorrect speed testing program in ufc which gave much better test figures that reality ]. It is worth noting that on sparc and Alpha CPUs, performance of the DES library can vary by upto %10 due to the positioning of files after application linkage. Eric Young (eay@cryptsoft.com) ======================================================================== * LICENSE ======================================================================== LICENSE ISSUES ============== The OpenSSL toolkit stays under a double license, i.e. both the conditions of the OpenSSL License and the original SSLeay license apply to the toolkit. See below for the actual license texts. Actually both licenses are BSD-style Open Source licenses. In case of any license issues related to OpenSSL please contact openssl-core@openssl.org.
